NHS Compassion

“If we want patients to experience kindness and compassionate care in their treatment, then the staff who deliver that care must experience the same kindness and compassion in the way they are managed and led”.

The healthcare community across Shropshire and Staffordshire, supported by Health Education England in the West Midlands has a shared vision and collective purpose to embed and recognize compassionate leadership across the region. Please click on the links below in pink to find out more.

We started our work together through a regional event Leading with Compassion in September 2015 to share good practice and innovation across Staffordshire and Shropshire

Shared discussions led to the creation of a Shropshire & Staffordshire Community of Practice to share compassionate leadership innovations and help co-create a resource for sharing best practice. This also led to the creation of a dedicated Recognition of compassion scheme (click for video) across the local health economy.

This is a simple scheme whereby there is a central point in each organisation (electronic and paper version) where staff, patients and carers can nominate someone who they feel and believe has demonstrated leading with compassion.

If you would like to participate – please complete the nomination form to send a person a special “thank you” for their efforts.

They will be sent a card, which will include your name and message but all other details will be treated confidentially. They will also receive a ‘leading with compassion’ badge.

We have recently held our Compassion Celebration Event on February 14th 2017 where we shared our journey to date and also shared our emerging definition and typology of compassion which has arisen from over 1500 nominations received as of our event date.

If you are interested in finding out more, please take a look at our second video which outlines our journey so far.
